Case Study: Construction and Small Business Funding Solutions

Objective: Understanding both their personal and business banking needs

Glenn is a builder who operates his own small-scale property development business in inner city Melbourne while ex-ad agency managing director Robyn recently launched her own start-up online homewares business.

Robyn left her high-profile position as head of marketing to take the online business she’d started to the next level – launching a new retail shop front store based on her internet store brand. The store offers quality homewares at affordable prices including bed linen, quilt covers, sheets, pillows, blankets, bedspreads, doonas, quilts, tablecloths etc.

“It was a busy time,” says Robyn. “Retail was all quite new to me, and this is quite a complex business – it’s like four businesses all under one roof that has to sometimes be marketed a bit differently. So it’s challenging. ”

One of the challenges usually associated with launching and running a new business, getting the finances organised. The couple worked with Invictus to help bring Robyn’s vision to life by using as equity one of a series of townhouses Glenn was building in a warehouse conversion project. Invictus also helped Glenn obtain construction funding for the project. The industry experience and contacts of Invictus provided a seamless and transparent process. The development was on a block adjacent to the Victorian terrace the family had also purchased to be their family home and was currently under renovations.

Robyn had already tested the retail concept with a “pop-up” store she opened earlier and operated for two months. It received an enthusiastic reception from locals, giving her more confidence to go ahead and find a permanent site. She worked closely with Invictus to prepare a business plan, and Invictus quickly came up with a solution to finance the expansion.

We have been with Invictus for around five years and one of the big advantages had been the one-stop shop service that Invictus has been able to provide for all our funding needs. “Invictus explored various options with a few different banks and found us the best offer, which saved us time and money. On the business side they arranged all the merchant facilities and many other solutions to help us manage payroll, staff superannuation, financial reporting etc. They understand our business and provide a seamless integration between our personal requirements and our business needs,” says Robyn.

“Invictus have always been terrific, very easy to communicate with and always taking the time to explain things and are happy to get out the white board! “It’s a great relationship. They are genuinely nice people to deal with, and we always have a good rapport with us. It’s certainly helped us having someone like Invictus who understands our situation as it evolves.”

Robyn says being able to deal with one company who can guide them through the banking maze and understands both their personal and business banking needs had been a key asset in developing the latest phase of her business.
